Things to know about Maspalomas:Maspalomas is situated at the south of Gran Canaria
Here we find the most beautiful beaches of this island. Fine golden sand at a length of 7 kilometers and a width of up to 1 kilometer. Imagine a desert where all around the only thing you can see are mountains made of sand dunes. The whole area of sand dunes covers aprox. 400 hectares. Together with the lagoon which is known as "la Charca" and a beautiful oasis of palm trees it forms the Special Nature Reserve of Maspalomas (Reserva Natural Especial de las Dunas de Maspalomas). The sand dunes can only be visited on foot or by camel. More info here:
Thanks to the length of the beach, it seems to be splitted into different sections for bathers. The first closest to the lighthouse and the lagoon is popular for families and kids as the waters here is not deep and bars and restaurants are very near. The next section aprox. 1 km in direction Playa del Ingles is known as a nudist beach. Between this and the "Punta de Maspalomas" - the end of Maspalomas - lies the section most popular for the gay community and for nude sunbathing.
Everywhere on the beach area you will find a medical centre and little bars! There's also sunbeds and parasols for hire. Lifeguards patroling the beach here and sometimes there are police patrols, passing perhaps once per hour.
Another interesting place to see is the Lighthouse (Faro) of Maspalomas. It is the most southern point of Europe! The exact position is 27°44'6.20" N and 15°35'56.20" W (27.735056, -15.598944) See it with Google Maps:
Started to be built in 1886 by Juan de León y Castillo, and in function since 1890 the 56 meter high tower was a resting point for ships which were travelling among the atlantic ocean. 2005 the old faro was declared as a "historical monument".
But Maspalomas is more than beaches and nature:
Maspalomas is together with Bahia Feliz, San Agustín, Las Burras, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, Sonnenland and Pasito Blanco the biggest tourist area called "Maspalomas Costa Canaria“ full with hotels, bungalows, holiday resorts, shopping centers, fun- and themeparks and a yacht harbour. Three eighteen-hole golf courses are another outstanding feature of leisure opportunities available in this fantastic holiday city. Furthermore, Maspalomas will soon become a international congress centre as the "Palacio de Congresos de Maspalomas", situated in the new area of Meloneras, has been opened recently.

Holidays to Gran Canaria
If you are sad at the thought of spending the winter in cold, wet and windy weather then you need to plan ahead for a break. The European winter can be cold and unforgiving, even summer can be poor in countries like the UK and Ireland. So if you want a break away to the sun, where do you go?
The small chain of Canary Islands are located just a short hop off the western coast of Morocco. They're volcanic landscapes have become well-known around the world, but it is the year round sunshine that attracts the hundreds of thousands of tourists to the island each and every year.
You have a wide range of islands to choose from; Tenerife is well established and Fuerteventura is a little less known. However, it is the island of Gran Canaria that has become a favourite holiday spot with so many tourists from all over Europe for good reason.
One of the main reasons why holidays to Gran Canaria are so popular is the massive range of accommodation available. It simply doesn't matter what your holiday budget is, you'll find suitable accommodation in Gran Canaria. Whether you want a last minute break in a cheap self-catering apartment or top quality 5 star hotels you'll find them here in sunny Gran Canaria.
Activities
The range of activities on offer in Gran Canaria is one of the main attractions of a holiday to Gran Canaria. If you want to just chill out on the beach, then there are plenty to choose from, especially along the sand dunes lining the Maspalomas area. Getting bored of lazing by the beach or pool, why not hits the shops and make a dent in your savings! If you happen to be out looking for something more adventurous then why not try surfing or windsurfing at one of the many world class reefs dotted around the island?
Eating out
If you are on a holiday to Gran Canaria the last thing you want to do is spend your evenings slaving over a meal. Luckily there is a massive choice of quality and affordable restaurants in the resorts of Maspalomas and Puerto Rico. One of my favourites is the bottomless Chinese where you literally just keep eating until you can take no more! There are European, Oriental and local restaurants offering the best of Canarian fayre.
Getting there
Gran Canaria may be a world away on the temperature gauge, but fortunately it is within easy reach of most European countries. If you live in the UK, where all inclusive holidays to Gran Canaria are particularly popular, you can book your flights and accommodation in one go. There are frequent direct flights connecting most major cities in the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe to Gran Canaria Airport. Prices are low but can creep up during the peak summer months and school holidays.
